WEST TEXAS – The 2024-2026 Realignment Process is officially underway marked by “Snapshot Day” which was Oct. 27.
That is the date the UIL requires its member schools to take a ‘snapshot’ of their enrollment and send them in for the purposes of biennial realignment. The numbers that are compiled will determine what classification schools will participate in. For Class A through Class 5A, football is further split into Division I (large schools) and Division II (smaller schools) within each classification.
The biennial realignment process is one of the most talked about events in Texas High School sports.
“It is one of the very few things that you can think of that touches literally every square inch of the great State of Texas,” said UIL Deputy Executive Director Dr. Jamey Harrison. “We touch every square inch of it with this process.”
While some hate the constant changes in district alignments, the UIL says it’s a necessary evil.
“Schools grow and lose enrollment all the time, also as a fast-growth state, we are adding schools all the time,” said Harrison. “In 6A, the cutoff is going to be where the 250th largest school in the state is. The problem is, I don’t know what the 250th biggest school in the state is or what their enrollment is.”
The University Interscholastic League will announce the cutoffs for districts in December and will follow with district alignment closer to February.
