Hearing God Speak
Many people think a person is crazy when they say something like, I heard God say, or The Lord told me. It seems almost unbelievable that the creator of the universe would speak to a mere human being. When we look at the word of God we see Jesus saying “ My sheep hear my voice” [John 10:27]. Now that tells us that if we don’t hear His voice, we must not be one of His sheep. That is serious business. I will share a small part of a large subject.
So if Christians are supposed to hear His voice, then we need to know a little about how He speaks to us. We know He speaks to us through His Word. We see, read and gain revelation in that way. He uses the Gift of the word of knowledge, the gift of the word of wisdom and prophecy.[1Cor.12]. I do not have the space to get into all of the Gifts in this writing. Here we are talking about hearing. Very few times do we hear the voice of God with our physical ears.
Most times we hear the voice of God down on the inside of our spirit, in what we call unction. If that unction leads to good, takes us up in life, and lines up with the word of God, then it likely is God. The trouble with that is, there are many who do not know what the word of God says, so they have nothing to measure the unction by, other than their own feelings. That is the reason so many in this day and time, are led by their flesh. “If It feels good do it?” No! Read Romans eight.
Then we hear by what goes through our mind. Our mind is the spiritual battle ground, so satan works very hard to control our mind. In the mind, we hear the Spirit of God, the spirit of evil and the human spirit or the flesh. Our mind sees and hears. ” It is hard to tell the fleshly spirit from the devils voice, because they are so close. The devil works through the flesh too.
You know how it is when a thought goes through your mind. Like, “She don’t like me”, or “I know they are talking about me” Or things like, “I am too bad for God to love” , “God could never forgive me.” Thoughts like “I am better than they are”, I can do that better than they can,” “ It’s their fault I’m where I am.” “My hair never looks good. – Who do you think gives thoughts? Of Course, the devil.
Then think about the thoughts that go like this ,”You can do better”, “You may have been cut down all your life, but you can be anything you set your mind to, ”You are strong, you can do this. ”God loves you” “Wait, don’t go that way”. “Turn down this road.” – - See this voice is for you, trying to help you.
Notice how the first set of statements were taking you down, or they were prideful. The second set of statements were lifting you up and encouraging you. Also the first set was laced with I, Me, My. The second was you, your, you can. The devil always talks in first person and God talks to you as a person. Hearing In first person always makes you think you are doing the thinking with your Ideas. The devil tries to stay incognita. He does not want you to know he is the influence. God talks to you as a person, so you can make your own decisions. He always gives you a choice. Free choice is a Gift from Him. He gives you the freedom to choose Him or reject Him.
He loves you so much, He paid an awful price for your forgiveness. Why not choose Him and began to hear His voice. He will lead you into all truth.
