The Greenwood girls kick off their season at 1 p.m. today when they play Amarillo Caprock to begin the WT Freeze Tournament in Canyon, while the Greenwood boys begin their season at 6 p.m. Friday with a home match against Odessa Permian JV.
Both teams are starting their second season with hopes of improving on their inaugural seasons as both made the Class 4A state playoffs.
The Rangerettes went 8-12-2 overall last year and got the No. 3 seed out of the district with a 4-4 mark.
Head coach Saydee Bailey was named Coach of the Year, while Brooke Clifton was named the district’s Newcomer of the Year.
All-District players returning for another year will be Clifton, first team all-district defender Madie Balderas, second team alldistrict forward and McMurry University signee Jackie Ramirez, and second team alldistrict midfielder McKenzie De La Rosa.
The boys team struggled with their non-district opponents but picked up two district wins (2-6) to finish fourth and also clinch a playoff spot.
A vast majority of last year’s team will be returning.
Head coach Jackson Burns is excited about getting the season started.
“We’re quite a bit better than we were last year. When we scrimmaged against West Plains, we lost 3-2 and we looked okay. We looked a lot better against Midland High JV and we managed to get two goals in. The kids have worked pretty hard from not having a program before last

year and being their first time ever to play a soccer match,” stated Burns.
He added the key for his team is to improve on play on set pieces, such as corner kicks as the Rangers gave up too many goals on corner kicks and didn’t get enough corners of their own.
Some key returners for the Rangers are midfielder Hugo Tavarez, senior Juan Erives and Triston Paxton. Burns said center back Elijah Rodriguez is another young player to keep an eye on.
The teams will be in a District 2-4A this year as Pecos and Andrews will join Greenwood, Lubbock Estacado, San Angelo Lake View, Snyder and Sweetwater in the league.
