West Texas remains in severe to extreme drought entering Spring

- The Permian Basin Underground Water Conservation District monitors the drought conditions diligently to better communicate the importance of conserving water. The U.S. Drought Monitor reveals Martin County to be in Severe Drought, Glasscock County mostly in moderate drought, and majority of Howard County to be in Extreme Drought. The PBUWCD offers a few helpful tips on how to save water, use it wisely and reduce waste.

Tip 1 – Know where your property’s main shut off valve is located. This ensures that you’ll be able to quickly shut off water and save hundreds of gallons of water in the event of a catastrophic leak.

Tip 2 – Adjust your sprinkler timer/times to water according to what the temperature is. When temperatures are low, water requirements for your landscape are low as well. When the temperature trend starts to head into steadily warmer weather, keep in mind that water evaporates quickly when the sun is high, so sprinkle when it's more likely to stay in the soil. Best time to water your yard is in the morning or evening.

Tip 3 – While waiting for water to heat up, collect the cold running water into a bucket or cup. You can use the collected water for watering your pets, indoor plants or for flushing the toilet.

Tip 4 – A change in temperature can cause pipes to expand and contract, which can potentially lead to leaks. Look out for leaky faucets, dripping water from shower heads, rusting pipes and signs of water damage. If any leaks are discovered, fix immediately to avoid wasting more water and to prevent possible serious damage.

Tip 5 - Hate raking? When you’re finished mowing, leave the grass clippings on the lawn. This will boost water retention and help grass grow thicker.
