– Carthage senior quarterback Connor Cuff and Cuero senior linebacker Sean Burks are the players of the year on the Blue Bell/Texas Sports Writers Association’s Class 4A all-state football team.
Carthage’s Scott Surratt was the coach of the year. His state title was his ninth, tying Gordon Wood’s record.
Jimmy Vasquez was selected for the Second Team Defense at Linebacker.
Rance Purser was chosen for Place-Kicker on the Third Team Offense and was Honorable Mention Punter.
Vazquez, recorded 116 solo tackles, 93 assisted tackles, 15 tackles for loss, three sacks, five pass breakups and two interceptions during the 2023 season.
Purser, who has committed to kick at Dodge City Community College, connected on 7 of 13 field goals, 24 of 27 extra points, and of his 49 kickoffs, 33 were touchbacks. He also kicked a Greenwood school-record 61yard field goal in a win over Shallowater.
Purser was also selected for the Texas High School Coaches Association 4A Super Elite Team as an Offensive Honoree.
