ABILENE – Football season is over for the Greenwood Rangers after getting beat 26-7 by Godley Friday night during a Class 4A Division II bi-district playoff game at Anthony Field at Abilene Christian University.
Greenwood’s defense did a great job holding the highpowered Wildcat’s offense to well under its 43.1 point per game scoring average. Unfortunately, the Ranger’s offense could only muster one touchdown allowing the Godley to hard fought win.
It was a defensive showcase in the first quarter as neither team allowed any points. Godley finally broke the zero-point tie midway in the second quarter with two big touchdowns and a 14-0 halftime lead.
Greenwood started to claw its way back into the fight with a 48-yard touchdown run by Aaron Fikes in the third quarter. Rance Purser nailed the extra point attempt cutting Godley’s lead to 14-7.
On a third-and-11 play, Godley’s quarterback Kole Allen threw to the corner of the end zone and connected with his receiver on a 12yard TD pass that gave the Wildcats a 20-7 advantage with 7:31 to play.
The Rangers offense ran into trouble on its next possession, as a sack for a 12-yard loss backed them up to an insurmountable fourthand- 26.
Following a turnover on downs, Godley delivered the back breaker with a 23-yard scoring run.
Purser started the game at quarterback for the Rangers and Ty Flowers entered the game at quarterback in the first quarter, while Purser moved to wide receiver. It was Flowers’ first game action since he suffered a shoulder injury on Sept. 30.
Flowers threw 15 of 23 for 124 yards and rushed six times for 28 yards.
Purser ended the game 2 of 4 passing for 13 yards and led the team in receiving with seven receptions for 65 yards.
Fikes led the Ranger’s ground attack with 16 carries for 93 yards and one touchdown. Dylan Dominguez rushed the ball twice for 21 yards and the rest of the team had two runs for 18 yards.
Mitchell Olsen hauled in four passes for 25 yards while Jovan Lopez, Zane Ogle, and Ethan Madrid had two catches each for 21, 13, and 13 yards respectively.
Godley (6-5) advanced to face Seminole in the area round of the playoffs, while the Rangers’ season ended at 5-6.
Greenwood’s Carlos Barraza recovered a fumble at the Ranger 16 to stop a potential Godley scoring drive in the third quarter.
