- Here is the Reporter-Telegram’s female athlete of the week for the period of March 5-11 based on online fan voting. The honors are sponsored by Midland Meat Company. Each week throughout the school year, fan voting can be done at mrt.com/aotw.
Adison Savage, Sr., Greenwood Savage picked up four medals at the Monahans Sandhills Relays track and field meet on March 10.
Savage collected two golds by winning both the long jump (17 feet, 7 ½ inches) and triple jump (361).
She also teamed up with Kate Crunk, Ava McIntyre and Grace Franks to win the 1,600 relay (4 minutes, 16.34 seconds). Savage ran the last leg.
The same group of girls also finished second (1:49.36) in the 800 relay to earn silver.
Savage was responsible for the Rangerettes picking up 29 team points, which garnered her the most reader votes for the top female athlete.
Savage never competed in the long jump until the 2022 district meet, volunteering her services when coach Kendall Thomas had an opening in the event.
“Adison has truly been a force to be reckoned with this season,” Thomas said. “It’s a blessing to have a senior that shows up, day in and day out, and leads by example. She never misses a workout and is constantly pushing herself to get better. That drive is her biggest contribution to the Rangerettes, because the girls see how hard she works, and it pushes them match her intensity.”
Other Rangerettes and Rangers that have been nominated for athelete of the week: Sydney Castillo, Jr., Greenwood Castillo hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh to lift Greenwood to a 5-4 win over Fort Stockton in the District 3-4A opener on March 10. She went 2-for-3 at the plate and picked up the win in the circle after striking out five batters and allowing four runs over seven innings.
Ty Presley, Jr., Greenwood Presley was a two-sport star in consecutive days. He pitched the Rangers to a 7-1 win over Sweetwater in the West Texas March Classic on March 9 by allowing one run (unearned) on two hits and three walks over 6 2/3 innings, while striking out seven. The next day he won the high jump by clearing 6 feet at the Monahans Sandhills Relays.
